I decided to do my own comparison based on my desktop usage to see the difference. Most reviews indicate that installing software in Windows is much easier than that of the desktop GNU/Linux world. And it also has games for old computer systems like Apple I, DOS, Acron, etc.I read a lot of reviews comparing GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows, and inevitably the topic of installing software comes up. Others, still, see Mint as the ideal desktop for Windows refugees, or those who are trying out Linux for the first time, and want an operating system that essentially works out of the box.Xbox 360 Emulator for PC for comes as a best gaming emulator on windows. Mint has become the very best example of what a Linux desktop should be: fast, easy, pleasing to the eye, useful and productive.

These older programs, many of them running on defunct and rare hardware, are provided for purposes of study, education, and historical reference. The Windows box I used for this test consisted of 500 MHZ Intel P3 processor with 384 megs of RAM. The Vintage Software collection gathers various efforts by groups to classify, preserve, and provide historical software. Feren OS is also a one-of-a-kind distribution for its customization and familiarity, as well as one of the very few Rolling Release distributions that take the Stable Path over Bleeding. Note: This article is the personal opinion of the author and not necessarily that of OSNews’.Feren OS is a free Windows and MacOS replacement with the best the Linux Community can offer in one package for customization, applications, and much more. Those of you that come from the Windows world may be a tad bit surprised at the ease in which software can be installed. However there is a problem with this method: it’s called “dependency hell.” The program that you are trying to install may depend on other libraries that are not installed on your system, and this will prevent the program from installing cleanly or even operating until the dependencies are met. One of the ways is to get a source “tar ball” unpack it, and issue the commands “./configure” “make ” “su -c ‘make install’ ” this will work on every GNU/Linux distro available. The PDFMagazines.org PDF Queen Phosphor Dot Fossils / (computers & consoles) Pirate's Portal Playing to Win Play it Again (Auslamian games blog)There are several ways to install software on a GNU/Linux distribution. Providing all the benefits of cutting-edge software combined with a focus on getting started quickly, automated tools to require less manual intervention, and help readily available when needed, Manjaro is suitable for both newcomers and experienced computer users.Patches Scrolls, The (Amiga/DOS/Win/Mac/Linux patches) Patent Arcade Patent Pending (emulation articles) PCjs documents archive PC Museum. Manjaro is an accessible, friendly, and open-source operating system.Installing software is as simple as opening a terminal and typing “apt-get install ”. The Debian repository also has thousands of titles to its credit. Debian is set up to link to either the stable, testing or unstable branch of their repository.Debian, as stated above, uses the apt-get package management system that is shared by several distros that are based upon Debian, including, Ubuntu, Libranet, Mepis ,and Xandros, to name only a very few. For example: Vidalinux is linked to the Gentoo’s Portgage tree which contains over 8000 packages. A repository is simply an FTP or HTTP server that has the software configured for a particular distro. Package managers must be linked to a repository. Another way to install software on a GNU/Linux system is by getting a precompiled package in the form of an RPM. Simply click the icon, which opens your browser and directs you to the site, then click the desired software that you wish to install. Other distros, Linspire, for exmple, are making the installation of software even easer by placing icons on the desktop that link to the distro’s repository. ![]() This a an excellent word Processor and, as stated earlier, is available for multiple platforms including the Macintosh. It can take hours to install a program by source, even on modern equipment.I needed a program for this demonstration that was cross-platform to be fair, so I choose the Word Processor Abiword. One other problem with source-based installs is long compile times, as you will see. Time 1 hour off in outlook for macApprox 34 minutes later on a system consisting of a Celeron 2.8 Ghz processor with 256MB of RAM, abiword was ready to go. I issued the command “emerge abiword”. It installs the software by compiling the source code. It uses Gentoo’s Portage tree to gain access to additional packages. Vidalinux is a distribution that is installed with pre-compiled packages for a particular processor or i686 architecture and is designed to be used as a Desktop OS. However I know some will dispute this and still stick by the notion that installing software in Windows is still easier, but let go of your preconceptions, and give Linux a try, and you’ll see.No, in windows 2000 or newer, there is no need to reboot the computer after installing 99% of all of the applications. Fedora uses YUM by default and it can be linked to several different repositories allowing access to thousands of additional packages with the same ease of use. It’s like Golf the lower score wins. It is also worth noting that these are not the only two packagers managers available. This may not be a typical procedure for all of GNU/Linux, but there are many excellent desktop distros available today that use apt-get as their package manager making software installation just as easy as above. Installing software on a GNU/Linux system does not have to be a tedious task for a desktop user, as thousands of programs are only a very short command away. I know some will complain about a 34 minute compile time, but if you do you are missing the point. I’ve seen way to many people using gentoo (myself included) that had programs in portage that would not compile on their system making it impossible to get the application you want. Most trivial software installations dont really need a reboot but they assume you are running windows 98 so they ask you to. (Granted not all applications are like this but most are).P.S. Insert cd or download application, open cd image, drag application to /Applications, drop. In linux you have to go to debian’s site and search the package list descriptions which is much more of a pain.Personally I think that the mac’s install process beats the both of them. You do NOT have to close anything to install an application unless you are updating a program that you are running.Another thing that this article doesn’t take into account is what if you don’t know what application you want? What if you just know what you want the application to do? In windows you go to download.com. For one step 7 on the windows is NOT necessary. ![]()
